CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
All classes focus on improvisation and composition - gently blending technique with student individuality and personal voice. All teachers are carefully selected in their area of expertise and required to attend a two week training in the soon to be patented SS technique. Descriptions: Dance Me A Story 1 & 2 DMAS 1: 2.5 - 3.5yrs DMAS 2: 3.5 - 4.5yrs All SSM students under 6 begin with this class as it opens the
mind, body and soul to all dance, music and self expression. Students
have a voice in choreographing, music selection and costuming (we make
our costumes, it's too easy to buy them and then they're like everyone
elses!) In this class we use a carefully selected storybook, fable or poem (or create one ourselves) as a jumping point to dance. A grand introduction to dance and the perfect environment to explore all aspects of creativity. A blend of music, improvisation, ballet and modern dance is an excellent and empowering introduction to the future study of dance techniques. Children learn fundamentals while developing their imagination and love of creativity and self-expression. We encourage individuality, a loud and proud voice, strong bodies, open minds and generous spirits. You will see a confident and self expressed child emerge before your eyes! Classes introduce students to ballet vocabulary, while developing
strength, proper alignment, musicality and the grace that is inherent in the
form. Creative Ballet: 4 - 6yrs Ballet 1: 6 - 10yrs (Students placed on an individual basis) Ballet 2: 6 - 10yrs (Students placed on an individual basis)
Introduces students to the world of HIP HOP. Focus on syncopated rhythms,
spins, poses, acrobatics creates a fun and exciting way to develop strength and
balance and a knowledge of the history of Hip Hop Tap 1: 4 - 6yrs Tap 2: 6 - 10yrs Introduces children to basic tap technique while enhancing musicality and
rhythmic skills - introduces students to classic rag-time, jazz, big band music
and the history of the art form Focus on how boys work. Classes are structured in a way that taps into the energy and thought process of the male. Boys NEED time with other boys, especially at a young age and these classes allow this time to be creative and thought provoking. We talk about what makes them tick in class, we listen, we select music, we bond. THEN we combine martial arts, hip hop, tumbling and creative dance to allow these young men to express themselves by co-creating 'dances' and learning choreographed dances tailored to fit their group dynamic. There is a strong emphasis on respect and gentlemanly behavior, boys walk out of class with their heads held high and a step in their stride.
Modern The Sweet Soul Technique encourages strong and theatrical modern dancers
through technique, improvisation and composition. Classes emphasize the weight
of the body and it’s relationship to space and gravity and favors movement
deriving from the expression of inner feeling. Students work on strength and
flexibility through center exercises, floor work and dance combinations Bharata Natyam (Classical Indian Dance) Students will acquire a holistic
understanding of the beautiful dance form Bharata Natyam. Class will
focus on learning the different hand gestures (to portray animals, elements of
nature, actions, etc.) and the basic footwork, building up to complete steps.
Drawing upon the creativity of each student, we will explore how to be a
successful storyteller through dance. Students will also learn about the
history of the dance form, as well as Hindu religion and culture. Flamenco ( description coming soon) Broadway Jazz Students dissect and learn not only the choreography but
the history and importance of each piece - from Hairspray to Astaire/Rogers in
Shall we dance - classes include a full body jazz warm up and floor work. Scene Study, Technique, Improvisation and Coaching. Sweet Soul Singing Coming this Fall 2010, Sweet Soul is excited to offer budding singers the opportunity to hone musicianship, strengthen ensemble-skills and learn the building-blocks of harmony through our Sweet Soul Choir. Using a blend of Eurhythmics, Kodaly pedagogy, Curwen hand-symbols and vocal games, children 6-10 learn the basics of sight-reading and appreciate the social importance of group dynamics while discovering the magic of music.
