Descriptions:

Dance Me A Story 1 & 2

DMAS 1: 2.5 - 3.5yrs
DMAS 2: 3.5 - 4.5yrs

All SSM students under 6 begin with this class as it opens the mind, body and soul to all dance, music and self expression.  Students have a voice in choreographing, music selection and costuming (we make our costumes, it's too easy to buy them and then they're like everyone elses!) In this class we use a carefully selected storybook, fable or poem (or create one ourselves) as a jumping point to dance.  A grand introduction to dance and  the perfect environment to explore all aspects of creativity.

A blend of music, improvisation, ballet and modern dance is an excellent and empowering introduction to the future study of dance techniques.  Children learn fundamentals while developing their imagination and love of creativity and self-expression.

We encourage individuality, a loud and proud voice, strong bodies, open minds and generous spirits. You will see a confident and self expressed child emerge before your eyes!

Ballet

Classes introduce students to  ballet vocabulary, while developing strength, proper alignment, musicality and the grace that is inherent in the form.

Creative Ballet: 4 - 6yrs

Ballet 1: 6 - 10yrs (Students placed on an individual basis)

Ballet 2: 6 - 10yrs (Students placed on an individual basis)

Hip Hop

Introduces students to the world of HIP HOP. Focus on syncopated rhythms, spins, poses, acrobatics creates a fun and exciting way to develop strength and balance and a knowledge of the history of Hip Hop

Tap 1 & 2

Tap 1: 4 - 6yrs

Tap 2: 6 - 10yrs

Introduces children to basic tap technique while enhancing musicality and rhythmic skills - introduces students to classic rag-time, jazz, big band music and the history of the art form

Boys Class

Focus on how boys work.  Classes are structured in a way that taps into the energy and thought process of the male.   Boys NEED time with other boys, especially at a young age and these classes allow this time to be creative and thought provoking.

We talk about what makes them tick in class, we listen, we select music, we bond.  THEN we  combine martial arts, hip hop, tumbling and creative dance to allow these young men to express themselves by co-creating 'dances' and learning choreographed dances tailored to fit their group dynamic.

There is  a strong emphasis on respect and gentlemanly behavior, boys walk out of class with their heads held high and a step in their stride.

Modern

The Sweet Soul Technique encourages strong and theatrical modern dancers through technique, improvisation and composition. Classes emphasize the weight of the body and it’s relationship to space and gravity and favors movement deriving from the expression of inner feeling. Students work on strength and flexibility through center exercises, floor work and dance combinations

World Dance
- aligns with the Sweet Soul philosophy of broadening student’s knowledge of culture, music, and movement! The world dance course will start with Bharata Natyam - Traditional Indian Dance and expand to African Dance and Flamenco.

Bharata Natyam (Classical Indian Dance)

Students will acquire a holistic understanding of the beautiful dance form Bharata Natyam.  Class will focus on learning the different hand gestures (to portray animals, elements of nature, actions, etc.) and the basic footwork, building up to complete steps.  Drawing upon the creativity of each student, we will explore how to be a successful storyteller through dance. Students will also learn about the history of the dance form, as well as Hindu religion and culture.

Flamenco ( description coming soon)

Broadway Jazz

Students dissect and learn not only the choreography but the history and importance of each piece - from Hairspray to Astaire/Rogers in Shall we dance - classes include a full body jazz warm up and floor work.

Acting/Play Making

Scene Study, Technique, Improvisation and Coaching.
Students will make costumes, create REAL plays, learn stage direction, be introduced to classic plays and playwrights and engage in fun and exciting theater games. Our acting teachers are EXTRAORDINARY – this class was a WINNER at our Summer ARTS Workshop!

Sweet Soul Singing

Coming this Fall 2010, Sweet Soul is excited to offer budding singers the opportunity to hone musicianship, strengthen ensemble-skills and learn the building-blocks of harmony through our Sweet Soul Choir. Using a blend of Eurhythmics, Kodaly pedagogy, Curwen hand-symbols and vocal games, children 6-10 learn the basics of sight-reading and appreciate the social importance of group dynamics while discovering the magic of music.
